Sanford Gray journeyed a long distance in his life. Sanford served in the 15th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. The 15th's primary mission was to protect Washington D.C. (1862-1863). He married, but by 1880 he was back on his parents farm in Vermont and widowed.

At some point Sanford moved west. In 1910, he is in the census as living in Malibu, California, a little seaside enclave that must have been a beautiful change from the long, cold winters of Sheffield, Vermont. In 1920, he was living in Los Angles. There was an application in November 1928 for a military marker for Sanford Gray. He is buried at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura, California.
