Pioneer Vineland Township Farmer At Age of 72


Halfdan H. Hanstad, 72, pioneer Vineland Township, succumbed late Monday (February 28) at a local hospital to a long illness.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hanstad farm home in Vineland Township and at two p.m. at the Sand Hill Lutheran church with the Rev. Louis Olson officiating. The body will lie in state from seven to nine p.m. Wednesday at the Stenshoel Funeral home here.

Mr. Hanstad was born March 10, 1865, in Norway and came to the United States 54 years ago, homesteading in Vineland township. He retired from active farming in 1920 and had since divided his time between Crookston and his farm home, since operated by his son.

He is survived by five sons: Hans H. at the farm home, Theodore, Ole, Helmer and Lawrence, all of Milwaukee; four daughters, Mrs. M. O. Hippe of Lankin, ND; Mrs. Clarence (Ragna) Shannon, of Hoople, ND; Mrs. John Thompson, of Climax and Nora of Crookston; a brother, Martin, of Climax, 31 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Halfdan and Bergitte had 13 children, 11 of whom are linked below. The other two are: Karl Hendrick Hanstad (1888-1888) and Theodore Alfred Hanstad (1894-1982).
