IRS public information officer; Air Corps veteran of WWII

WEST CHATHAM - Martin J. Dempsey, 85, a retired public information officer for the Internal Revenue Service, died Sunday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

He was the husband of Margaret (Jordan) Dempsey.
Born in Shenandoah, Pa., he graduated from high school in Mahanoy City, Pa., and earned his bachelor's degree in education at the State Teachers College in West Chester, Pa., in 1934.

A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, Mr. Dempsey served for four years as a chief warrant officer mainly in the European Theater. After being discharged, he worked for the United States government for the remainder of his career, including nearly 20 years for the IRS as a public information officer at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mr. Dempsey was a summer resident of West Chatham since 1958, becoming a permanent resident upon his retirement in 1971 when he moved from Broomall, Pa. He was a communicant of Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham and active with the Boy Scouts of America. He also served on the Cape and Islands District Eagle Scout Review Board.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Martin J. Dempsey of Henderson, Nev., and James Jordan Dempsey of Littleton; two brothers, Laurence F. Dempsey of Kutztown, Pa., and Joseph A. Dempsey of Broomall, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will form at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Nickerson Funeral Home, Crowell Road, Chatham, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Highland Avenue, Chatham. Burial will follow at 1:15 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
