He was ordained a priest on March 30, 1941. He became the first auxiliary bishop of Pittsburgh Oct. 23, 1956, the first bishop of Passaic Sept. 10, 1963, the fourth bishop of Pittsburgh on March 5, 1968, and then became the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Pittsburgh June 11, 1969. He retired as archbishop on June 12. 1991.
