Staff Sergeant Dempsey, 21 years old, widely known Fort Smith youth, was killed Thursday in an airplane crash near El Paso, Texas.

Sergeant Dempsey was the son of Mrs. Myrtle Butler, 3609 North Fifieth Street, who received a telegram notifying her of the death of her son. He was graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1940.

Sergeant Dempspey is survived by his mother, his stepfather, Floyd Butler, a (half) brother, Mack and a (half) sister Rosalie. His (maternal) grandfather is W.T. Dempsey, Fort Smith.

The funeral will be held in Fort Smith with the Fentress Funeral Home in charge of arrangements which have not yet been completed. (End of article)

Staff Sergeant Jack W. Dempsey was the son of Myrtle (Dempsey) Dempsey-Butler & Aubrey J. Dempsey. His (paternal) grandparents included; Lucy Jane Glidewell Dempsey-Rapier & Charles Franklin Dempsey; his (paternal) great-grandparents included; William Harrison Dempsey and Rebecca "Jenny" (Nicholson) Dempsey and Matthew Glidewell and Sarah Rebecca (Duncan) Glidewell; and he was (maternal) nephew to William Thomas Dempsey & Buell Dempsey; and (paternal) nephew to Mozel Dempsey-Brisco, Ruth Dempsey-Thompson, Paul Dempsey and Kenneth Dempsey.

Jack's parents, Miss Myrtle Dempsey, age 18, and Aubrey J. Dempsey, age 20, were married in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas on June 9, 1921. Aubrey left the state on April 5, 1922 to find work. Even though Aubrey sent correspondence of his intent to come home, he was never heard from again. Myrtle sought a divorce and it was granted in Sebastian Chancery Court, Fort Smith District.

September 22, 1923 Mrs. Myrtle (Dempsey), Dempsey, age 19, married Floyd Butler, age 21, in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.

Jack's birthdate, December 17, 1921, is from Fentress Funeral Home records and from his U.S. World War II Army Enlistment record, which states his birth year to be 1921. His parent's Divorce Decree states Feburary 1922.

According to the Army Enlistment Record and Fentress Funeral Home, Jack was serving at Biggs Army Airfield, Fort Bliss, near El Paso, Texas.
