He mustered in as a private and was promoted to Corporal in March-August 1864. He was present and accounted for until he was wounded in the head with a dangerous round ball gunshot wound to the fleshy portion of the back side of his head and was listed as dead at Fisher's Hill Virginia on September 22 1864. It was later discovered he was taken prisoner and sent to Sheridan Hospital Winchester VA. He was transferred to Hammond General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in November. He was transferred to Point Lookout Prison Maryland on March 31, 1865. Point Lookout Prison was considered a death prison beause of the over crowding and poor sanitary conditions. He was released at Point Lookout on June 2, 1865 in a prisoner exchange after he took the Oath of Allegiance. The Northern Generals issued an order to release only the prisoners that was thought to be terminal. They said they did not want them to recover and be able to fight again.
