He served six years with the North Carolina National Guard. Also, he served with the United States Navy. He was a member of the Concord Masonic Lodge since 1962, and served as the Master of the Lodge in 1969. He was a member of the York Rite and was a Shriner. He was a member of the Speed Ruritan Club. He was survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Glover Andrews; two daughters, Yvonne Andrews Ellis and Shauna Andrews Andrews (Kevin); one son, John Garland "Jackie" Andrews, Jr.; one granddaughter, Stacey Lanier; and three grandsons, Andrew Lanier, Thomas Andrews and Aiden Andrews; two sisters, Mary Andrews Manning and Clara Andrews Barracato; and one brother, Joe Andrews. His funeral was held on July 9, 2009, with The Rev. Ed Conner and The Rev. Tom Webster officiating. His burial was with Masonic Rites.
