To Benton, Ontario (after 1823 became Yates), New York about 1812 where he and his father appear on tax list as early as 1813 "John Johnston and John Johnston, Jr." and 1816 and 1821 rolls where he owns 100 acres and 114 by 1822; to Washtenaw County, Michigan Territory 1836, near their daughter, Mary (#21). John and Elizabeth contributed to the building of schools in Lodi and were charter members of the Methodist Church in Lodi. Census of Benson, Yates, NY 1820 and 1825: both John Johnson and John Johnson, Jr. were counted and appear on same page. He was appointed administrator along with widow Lydia Johnson for his brother, Gilbert's estate on 20 September 1828 in Benton, NY. 1860 census lists him as having $5,000 in real estate; $2,000 in personal estate and states he was born in New York. The Saline River ran through his 228 acre farm, located a couple of miles northwest of Saline, Michigan.
