John Ray Dawson, 78, passed away August 19, 2010 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 29, 1931 in Ogden, Utah the son of Ray John and Mary Elma Barber Dawson. John married Donna Mae Sewell on August 26, 1951. She preceded him in death on February 12, 1994.

John Ray Dawson, resided in Layton, Utah for over 70 years. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a teacher and a coach for Davis High School for nearly 40 years and served as an Athletic Director. John was inducted into the Utah Hall of Fame as a coach and an athlete.

Not only were sports a huge part of John's life, so were his family, friends, students past and his fellow coaches. Sharing the memories and stories of games "back in the day" always brought a smile to his face. John spent every chance he could sharing his cabin in Island Park with anyone who wanted to experience the beauty. Showing them the ropes where the best fishing holes were.

All along, by his side he always had his four legged best friend; his trusty companion. John will be greatly missed by all his friends and family, but is finally alongside the love of his life; Donna.

Surviving are his children: Kirk John (Bjorg F.) Dawson, Layton; Kathryn Carlin, Park City; Pamela Dawson, St. Petersberg, FL; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sisters, Barbara Dawson (Richard) Hendricksen, Mary Dawson (Harry) Ballard and former brother-in-law and friend Roger Butler.

Preceded in death by his wife Donna, parents and his long-time companion his dog Jaxsen by two months.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
