PENDLETON - The funeral for retired railroad worker, Earl Davis Bensel, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at the Pilot Rock Community Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Bensel, 96, of Pendleton, died Thursday, June 24, 2004, at St. Anthony Hospital.

The second eldest of six children, he was born July 28, 1907, at Colfax, Wash., to August Edward and Edith Belle Davis Bensel. He moved with his family to Hermiston in 1910. He grew up at Hermiston and graduated from Hermiston High School in 1925, then attended Western Oregon Normal School at Monmouth.

In 1928, he married Lois Faye Wilson Connell. The couple had three sons, Earl Dean, Donald Homer and Richard Allen. They divorced in 1943.

In 1952, Mr. Bensel married Margot Gilliland Foster and became stepfather to Janice Foster and Judy Foster.

During his life he was employed by Tum A Lum Lumber company and in 1937, went to work for Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman/conductor on both passenger and freight trains. He retired from the railroad in 1972 and the Bensels moved to Pilot Rock.

He was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church at Pilot Rock, the Pendleton Country Club, BPO Elks 288 and the Masons. He had served on the Pilot Rock Planning Commission for several years.

Mr. Bensel enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and golf. It was said "he was the best old golfer around."

Survivors include his wife, Margot, of Pendleton; sons, Earl of Kirkland, Wash., Don of Pilot Rock, and Dick in Arizona; stepdaughters, Janice Bensel and Judy Campbell, both of Pilot Rock; 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pilot Rock Community Presbyterian Church or the Pilot Rock Cemetery for purchase of a tent shelter for services, directly or through Bishop Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 325, Pendleton, OR 97801.
