Lydia was reputed to be flighty and high strung, however, she retained strong ties to her children as her fortunes went from bad to worse. She was raised in a well-to-do family and married an educated school teacher. After she set up housekeeping her fortunes started to go downhill. Her first two children died at young ages. Then her husband's alcoholism started draining the family finances. To follow his career, the family moved from Nova Scotia to Massachusetts where her two youngest children were born and ultimately to Scranton PA, where Richard ended his life working in a meat factory. With each consecutive move they became poorer and poorer.

After Richard's death, Lydia moved to San Diego, California with her daughters, where she converted to Christian Science. Lydia died on 12 Dec 1937 in San Diego and was cremated. She was 98 years old.
