CENTERVILLE — Sally Wiinikainen Syrjala died on August 15, 2010, at the Eagle Pond Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. Sally was born on June 21, 1948, in West Barnstable, Mass. She was the daughter of the late Victor and Lempi Mary Wiinikainen.

She was predeceased by her husband Edward "Ike" Syrjala and her sister Helen Bahm. She is survived by her brother Victor Wiinikainen, her sister Nancy Sobel of Lake City, Mich., several aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.

Sally graduated valedictorian of her class in 1966 from Barnstable High School. She earned an associate degree in accounting from Cape Cod Community College and a BSBA from Western New England College. She worked at the Christ Church in Harwich Port, Independence House, Health Education Associates, and Art Waves. Sally was a member of The First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. Some of her many volunteer activities included: Treasurer of Green Cape, Chair of the Friends of Cape Cod Museum of Art, and Secretary of West Barnstable Historical Society. Sally was very proud of her Finnish and Cape Cod roots. She was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her generous spirit and sense of humor will be missed by all. Sally enjoyed writing, photography, gardening, crocheting, card making, reading, and baking.

A graveside service will be held at the Crocker Park Cemetery in Barnstable at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010.
