BAIRD, MILLARD - of Clinton took the hand of his Lord and Savior on August 17, 2010 at the Windwood Healthcare Center after an extended illness.

He was born to Walter and Ella Blankenship Baird on November 9, 1926 in Capuchin (Scott County) Tennessee.

He was the fourth of five siblings. Millard attended elementary school in Scott County and graduated from Jellico High School in Campbell County.

After service in the United States Navy, he returned to Jellico to marry Bobbie Jean Sowder on May 23, 1948. He worked in his father's business and for Imperial Cantrell prior to joining the Jellico Electric System in the mid-1950's where he worked as the business manager until 1970.

He and his two brothers operated the Baird Lumber Company in Jellico from the mid-1960s until the early 1970s.

In November 1970, he joined the Clinton Utilities Board where he worked in various capacities including Assistant General Manager and Secretary for the Board of Directors of the Union Bank of Jellico for 40 years, and was a past member of the Jellico Masonic Lodge.

In Clinton, Millard joined the Second Baptist Church with his family where he was a president of his Sunday School Class and faithful member for almost 40 years. He served on several committees at the church over the years. Millard was a member of Clinton Lions Club where he worked for the betterment of his community in various volunteer positions including secretary and president of the club. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of Community Action of Anderson County and a lifelong Republican.

Millard is preceded in death by his parents; his father in-law and mother in-law, John C. Sowder; his brothers in-law, Willard Sexton and Virgil Bridges; and his brothers, J.C. Baird and Sterling Baird, all of Jellico.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bobbie, and by his son and daughter in-law Robert Millard Baird and Patricia Walker Baird of Clinton; grandson, Robert Patrick Walker Baird, a senior at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts near Boston; daughter and son- in-law Margaret Ann Baird Williams and John David Williams of Clinton; granddaughter, Andrea Jean Williams, a junior at Clinton High School; sisters Grace Baird Sexton of Farragut and Lola Baird Bridges of Alcoa; sister-in-law Jessie Creekmore Baird of Jellico; and several nieces and nephews. He was very proud of his family heritage and had studied the genealogy of his relatives to their roots in Scotland.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Second Baptist Church in Clinton for Millard Baird with Reverend Mike Thompson presiding on Saturday, August 21, 2010. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am to 12:00 with the service commencing at 12:00 noon.. Graveside services will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

The family extends its highest gratitude to the dedicated people that work at the Windwood Healthcare Center in Clinton and to the many friends that have called, sent cards, letters, and prayers during this difficult time.
