Age 20

Halton, who resided in Frankford, Sussex County, Delaware, served as a Ordinary Seaman with the Merchant Marines onboard the S.S. W.D. Anderson during World War II.

The duties of the Ordinary Seaman were actually to assist the Able-Bodied Seaman. In reality, however, he was the deck utility man and may be called upon to do any one of many tasks.

The S.S. W.D. Anderson, unescorted and unarmed, was enroute from Corpus Christi, TX to Philadelphia when she was torpedoed by " German U-504 " about 12 miles northeast of Jupiter Light, Florida. Eight officers and 27 crewmen were lost as the ship soon sank with only one survivor.

Halton was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded the Merchant Seaman's Mariners Medal with a combat star.

Son of James T. Carey and Susan J. Carey Carey.
