At the urging of his younger brother, also Don Carlos Matteson, in 1861 he set out for California. In sailed upon the ship North Star, bound for Aspinwall, Panama. He eventually arrived in San Francisco 06 Jun 1861. He then moved on to Stockton, where he worked for his brother in the blacksmithing business.
Seeking an increase in revenue, H.S. eventually went to Idaho, where he successfully mined for gold. He returned to California and mined copper in Copperopolis. In the fall of 1867, he purchased more than 300 hundred acres of land eight miles east of Modesto, California. Here he successfully raised grain crops until his death from pneumonia in 1891.
