Enlisted in Troop 1, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, on November 3, 1903, at the Madison Avenue Armory, New York City. Served through the ranks and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. Squadron A Cavalry was called for service on the Mexican border, mustered in June 30, 19916. He served with Troop C & Machine Gun Troop, on the border. The Squadron qas assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, as part of the 6th NY Division (later to be the 17th Division). He returned to New York with his Troop, December 23, 1916 and mustered out of border service 28, 1916.

Squadron A Cavalry reorganized for the World War as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He served as the Adjutant of the Squadron/ Battalion till, March 1, 1918, when he was transferred to Company A, 105th Machine Gun Battalion. Promoted April 8, 1918 to Captain then transferred to the 304th Cavalry Regiment. Transferred to the 54th Field Artillery and promoted to Major, Field Artillery, Sept. 26, 1918. Discharged from the service, Feb. 21, 1919.

His father Frederic W. Wurster was the last Mayor of the City of Brooklyn.
