CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS - Merle Wesley Humes, 81, RD 1, Cambridge Springs, a former Carnation Milk employee, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1992, at his home following a period of failing health.

He was born in Woodcock Township, Aug. 20, 1910, a son of Fred M. and Coral Hale Humes. He married Hazel Bisbee, June 25, 1932. She preceded him in death March 2, 1991. He was a life-long resident of the Cambridge Spring area.

He first was employed by Carnation Milk Co., Cambridge Springs, retiring in 1969 after 30 years of service. He also was a self-employed farmer. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Engineers. He was instrumental in beginning the Richmond 4-H Club in 1946, and was a former member of the Rockdale Grange. He was a member of Teepleville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. James (Marilyn) Castile and Mrs. Kenneth (Macie Ellen) McElhaney, both of RD 1, Cambridge Springs, and Mrs. Anthony (Joyce Anne) Sciere of Pittsburgh; two sons, Fred C. Humes of Meadville and Richard D. Humes of RD 1, Cambridge Springs; three stepsisters, Catherine Melvin of Cambridge Springs, Ida Edge of RD 2, Saegertown, and Lela Nageotte of Meadville; a half brother, Frank T. Humes of Blooming Valley; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Mattie Briggs; and brother, Harold E. Humes.

A funeral will be held today at 2 p.m. at Van Matre Funeral Home, 335 Venango Avenue, Cambridge Springs, with the Rev. Theresa Fouts of Teepleville United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery, Cambridge Township.
