Born Mary Jane Healy, Mom's lifetime took her most of the way around the world, both as a Lieutenant Healy, a nurse in Burma and India during World War II, and later when she and Dad traveled extensively after their children were grown. They had seven sons and a daughter, although they lost two of the sons as infants. Although Mary Jane was 1 1/2 inches too short and five pounds too light to be eligible to serve in the Army, nobody looked too closely as she volunteered, and she served in the CBI Theater, and was on Okinawa when the atomic bombs ended the war. She'd been assigned to wade ashore with the first wave of troops had the invasion of Japan been necessary.

After the war, she rejoined Lt. Donald W. Delorey, who she'd met on the way overseas. He was hospitalized at Lovell General Hospital in Massachusetts for 18 months after losing six inches of his right leg when he was shot by machine gun fire. They were married on March 5, 1946.

After the war, working mainly as a wife and mother, she returned briefly to nursing in the late 1960s, but felt she wasn't equipped for the changes in her profession in the intervening 20 years. After Dad's retirement in the 1970s, they traveled and enjoyed their family.
