Born in this city, he was a lifelong resident and a 1939 graduate of Holyoke High School. He was elected to the HHS Hall of Fame in 1993.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the carrier USS Belleau Wood and with B-24 bomber antisubmarine units.
He was a longtime member of the Elks, and was named Irish Elk of the Year in 1982. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 351, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Hibernians and the Holyoke Country Club.
He served on many boards and committees, including the Boys Club, the Red Cross and the Save the Merry-Go-Round and Save the Victory Theater committees, and was a director of Peoples Savings Bank and Western Massachusetts Elder Care.
He received the Holyoke Community College Distinguished Service Award in 1985, the Ann McHugh Lifetime Achievement Award from the Democratic Party, the James J. Kelly Political Action Award for support of public education, and special honorary service awards from the Holyoke Geriatric Authority, U.S. Postal Service, the state Turnpike Authority, the Holyoke Firefighters Association, the Chamber of Commerce and Massachusetts Citizens for Life.
He was honored as the Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade grand marshal in 1994.
He leaves his wife, the former Charlotte McCormick; a son, Robert Jr. of Holyoke; two daughters, Mary Anne McDonough and Lynn Lajoie, both of Holyoke; two brothers, John and Frank, both of Holyoke; a sister, Marion O'Neil of Tempe, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren. A daughter, Susan Rohan , predeceased him.
The funeral will be Monday morning at James P. Hobert & Sons Funeral Home and Sacred Heart Church, with burial in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours are late Sunday afternoon until evening.
