Whitley Services Held Tuesday At Carnegie Church
Funeral services for Mrs. J.M. Whitley, pioneer resident of the Alfalfa and Carnegie communities, were heal at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist church with Rev. Elson Hargrove, pastor officiating. He was assisted by Rev. Jack Young, Alfalfa pastor. Interment was in the Alfalfa cemetery with Pitcher Funeral Home in charge.
Mrs. Whitley died Sunday at the Carnegie hospital after an illness of several weeks. She suffered a broken limb about 18 months ago but had recovered. She became ill last fall and spent some time in the Presbyterian hospital in Oklahoma City. Shortly after returning home she entered the Carnegie hospital and had spent several weeks there before her death.
Laura Sophie Norman was born September 22, 1879. She was married to Jasper Maxson Whitley November 12, 1899, at Abbott, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Whitley came to Oklahoma in 1900, first locating at Elk City. In 1904 they moved to a farm north of Alfalfa and in 1922 to a farm northeast of Alfalfa where they lived until Mr. Whitley's death in 1955. Since then Mrs. Whitley has made her home in Carnegie.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Whitley took an active interest in school, church and community affairs during their lifetimes.
She is survived by seven children, Burette and Thurman of Carnegie, Charles, Warren, Norman and Mrs. Alta Mick, all of California, and Mrs. Cecil Purdy of Altus; two sisters, Miss Willie, Beeville, Texas, and Mrs. N.M. Foley of Uvalde, Texas; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
