Daughter of George and Elizabeth Dunham Cowgill, married Alfred Havens on January 30, 1851, in Delaware County, Ohio.

Alfred and Mary had four children:
1) Edson Alphonso (1852 - 1925) married Adela Eliza Davis (sister of Alice)
2) Hortense Millie (1854 - 1927) married 1. Sela Dunham, 2. Frank Tinkcom
3) Washington Henry (1857 - 1925) married Rebecca Pike
4) Alfred Byron (1864 - 1944) married Alice Davis (sister of Adela)

Died, at her home in Hartington, June 2, 1905, Mrs. Alfred Havens. Mrs. Havens, whose maiden name was Mary E. Cowgill, was born near Delaware, Ohio, September 26, 1833, and was married to Alfred Havens January 30, 1851. She moved to Cedar County in the spring of 1883, where she resided until the time of her death. Mrs. Havens had been afflicted with several paralytic strokes and suffered severely until death brought her to release. In early life she united with the United Brethren church of which she continued a true and faithful member until the time of her death. Four children mourn the loss of a loving mother. They are: E. A. Havens and Mrs. Frank Tinkcom of Hartington, and W. H. and A. B. Havens of Gregory County, South Dakota. The funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church this afternoon conducted by Rev. C. W. Sidebotham.
