Rites Saturday For Former Alfalfa Man
Funeral services were conducted at the Alfalfa Methodist church late Saturday for Ward Smith, 59, who died early Friday at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rev. Robert Harrison, pastor, conducted the service and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery under direction of the Pitcher Funeral Home.
A veteran of World War I, Smith had been a patient in the veteran' hospital at Albuquerque for some time before his death. Member of the Carnegie post of the American Legion served as bearers and conducted the service at the grave.
Smith had grown to manhood at the home place two miles north and a mile and a half west of Alfalfa.

Ward H. Smith was born June 11, 1894 at Wynnewood and died at a veterans' hospital in Albuquerque, N. Mexico, August 13, 1943 at the age of 49. He had been in a hospital at Sulphur the past winter but his health improved and he went to Borger, Tex. before he became worse and was returned to the Albuquerque hospital several months before he died.
Smith, a boyhood resident of the Alfalfa community, had lived in Oklahoma City the past 15 years. He was married to Miss Elizabeth McClure, October 16, 1928, at Amarillo Texas, by Rev. E.E. Robinson, Methodist minister.
He was a veteran of the first world war having entered the service May 28, 1918 and was discharged December, 5, 1919. He was a member of Co.G, 143 Inf., 36th Div. and was in three major offensives, Muse-Argonne, Champagne and The Marne. He was a member of the American Legion for many years.
Funeral services were held at the Alfalfa Methodist church at dusk Saturday, Aug. 14 and burial was in the Alfalfa cemetery. Rev.Robt. Harrison conducted the service and the American Legion accorded honors at the grave.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, and their nine-year-old foster daughter, Cleonne Houston of Oklahoma City; three brothers, Wade, Cecil and Paul Smith, Torrance, Calif., and four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Willis, Alfalfa; Mrs. Elizabeth Witt, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Effie Flagg, El Reno, and L.P. Brook of Port Chicago, Calif., as well as many other near relatives and friends.
