LAST RITES HELD FOR D. C. MINNICH
Civil War Veteran Was Member Of Pioneer Family
Funeral services for DeWitt C. Minnich, 92, Civil War veteran, who died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Horace Heistand, of Aberfelda, were conducted at the Heistand residence at 9:30 a.m. Monday, with burial in Ferncliff Cemetery.
Mr. Minnich, a member of one of the county's pioneer families, was born June 4, 1843, the son of John and Caroline Layton Minnich, on his father's farm, north of Enon.
His mother was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Layton, early settlers of this region. His paternal grandparents, Michael and Eva Minnich, came from old Virginia to Ohio in wagons pulled by oxen, and were among the first white settlers in Clark County.
John Minnich, the father of DeWitt Clinton, was born in Clark County in 1810, and most of his life was devoted to clearing land for habitation. He acquired and developed many acres of rich farm land in the lower Mad River Valley. He held many township offices including the superintendency of the construction of the Valley pk.
DeWitt Clinton Minnich was educated in the district schools, and at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, after which he taught in the grade schools of Clark County for several years.
During the Civil War, he enlisted for a term of 100 days, and took part in the engagements at Chickamauga and Chattanooga.
On Feb. 14, 1867, he was married to Elizabeth Higgins, of Trotwood, O.
The greater part of Mr. Minnich's life was spent in farming. He was unusually active despite his advanced age. He had been ill since the first of the year.
Besides the daughter at whose home he died, two other daughters, Mrs. Grace Miller, of Springfield, and Mrs. Henry Willett, of this city; a sister, Mrs. A. F. Humphreys, of Springfield; and six grandchildren, Dr. Joseph Webb, Springfield surgeon; Robert Young, president of the Ohio Western Business College; John Young, Louis, Lamar and Christine Miller, all of Springfield, survive.
The funeral rites Monday were in charge of the Rev. D. Earl McKinney, D.D., pastor of the Oakland Presbyterian Church.
