Funeral services over the remains of Benjamin Huger Heyward, Jr., who died late Wednesday night in a local hospital from injuries received while practicing for the motorcycle races at the fair grounds Wednesday afternoon, were held at noon today in Trinity Church, the Rev. Wilmer S. Poyner officiating. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.
The following young men acted as pallbearers; John L. McQueen, Sheppard T. Pender, Douglas McKay, N. B. Heyward, M. D., W. Anderson Clarkson, T. M. DuBose, Jr., M. D., James Woodrow and
E. B. Shelby.
B. H. Heyward, father of the deceased, with other members of the family arrived in Columbia this morning from their home at Rion. A committee selected from Clemson football team will express their sympathy for Dan Heyward, star halfback , of the Carolina eleven, in behalf of the Clemson squad.
The late Ben Heyward was a son of B. H. Heyward, Sr., general manager of the Winnsboro Granite Corporation at Rion. He was associated with his father in the business at the time of his death.
A brother, Dan Heyward, member of the Carolina football eleven, Barksdale and John Heyward; and three sisters, Mary Barksdale, Elizabeth and Lillian Heyward service the deceased. Young Heyward had many relatives in this city and counted his friends both in Columbia and throughout the state, by the score.
