These are excerpts of writings my grandmother (Rachel Wright) had regarding her Uncle John:

John H. Johnson was a first generation immigrant who had moved to Dexter, Minnesota and sent for his brother Lawrence later. He was not a large man, but was very kind, tender-hearted and sincere religious. While a farm hand near Dexter he met and married Louisa Bush (or Buhs) a German girl 15 or 16 years old. They had a large family.

John drove a large touring car, an Overland at one time and a Maxwell. Their children included: Alfred, Emma, Minnie, Jens, Martha (died young and is buried at Lakewood Cemetery at Battle Lake), Alice, Joyce, Duane, Clarence, and Evelyn.

John in his younger days was always trading property and they had lived quite a few places, mostly on farms in the Battle Lake area.

He traded some property for some land in South Dakota and when they got there found that there was little in the way of buildings and no fences, not a place where he could make a living. He felt he had been cheated and wondered how to get rid of it and get his money back. "Well," he said, "The Lord helped me, and I got more for it than I paid for it."

The family lives on through at least 21 grandchildren and more great grand children than I care to count.
