Clarence George Hillary, 84, retired superintendent of the Villisca Municipal Power Plant died Friday, November 17, at an Omaha hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Hilleary served as superintendent of the local power plant from construction in 1936 until his retirement in 1966.
A native of Williams in Hamilton County, Iowa, Mr. Hilleary was born November 14, 1894. He graduated from high school in Afton, Iowa, then proved up a homestead in Hinsdale, Montana where he ranched and operated heavy machinery in Montana and Canada for nine years.
He entered the Army in 1918 and served until the end of World War 1 after which he returned to Montana for several years before taking employment with Fairhands Morse & Co., Reigit, Wisconsin. In 1932 he was named superintendent of utilities at Unionville, Missouri and in 1936 came to Villisca.
He was married in 1932 to Lila Capps, who died in 1960. In 1961 he was married to Leta Cooney, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Donna) Patton, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and Mrs. Philp (Opal Mae) Hayes, Sioux City, Iowa; a brother Harry, Webster Grove, Missouri, eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his step grandmother, and two brothers.
Mr. Hilleary was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges and a continuous member of the American Legion for nearly sixty years. He was a past president of the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 20, at the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Chris Herring officiated. Music was by Mrs. Kenneth Higgins with Mrs. Quincy Dunn at the organ. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Milton Johnson, Mrs. Jim Milligan, and Mrs. Willis Peterman. Ushers were George Muller, Jr. and Willis Peterman. Casket bearers were Kenneth Higgins, Roscoe Moore, Earl Marsh, Herb Pillis, Donald Patterson, and Jim Milligan.
Burial was in the Arlington View Cemetery, Villisca. Wolfe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
