The son of Job & Frances Elizabeth (Yeoman) Welling died approximately 10 miles east of this location and was buried Wednesday June 18.

This grave is an important stop along the Mormon Handcraft Trail Tour.

Job Welling, Jr. and his parents were part of the first Handcart company (Edmund Ellsworth Co.) of Mormon Pioneers to cross the plains to Salt Lake City, Utah. According to the record of the first handcart company, little Job Welling Jr. died on the plains of Iowa on 17 June 1856 of "canker or inflammation of the bowels." It was probably near what is now known as the town of Grinnell, Iowa. On 18 June the company traveled 10 miles and little Job was buried there "three feet from the North East corner of Mr. Watson's farm, Section 25, Township 80, Range 17 on the plains of Iowa." The burial place is now within the bounds of the Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve in Jasper County, Iowa, and there is a monument on the grave site.
