When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Whitney enlisted in Battery G., 1st New York Light Artillery. He served for 3 years and received his honorable discharge on September 22, 1864.
Mr. Whitney lived in Washington in 1865 and was present at the Capitol when congress passed the act abolishing slavery.
He saw President Lincoln take oath for office in 1865. Mr. Whitney was given a military and Masonic burial.

The initial B. for his middle name may or may not be for Bohannon. I have not personally found any proof of this possibility.
