Mrs. Catharina Harms

Mrs. Catharina Harms, nee Rodenburg was born June 5, 1848 in the Province of Hanover, Germany. At the age of 13 years she came to America with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Rodenburg. For one year they lived in St. Louis and then moved to Benton County Missouri. Here she was instructed in the word of God by the Rev Hahn and in the year 1863, she became a communicant member of the Lutheran church by the rite of confirmation. In the year of 1869, she entered her second marriage with Christian Harms. This union was blessed with nine children. Two sons, John and Emil, proceded the mother into eternity.

In the year 1874 she moved to Nebraska with her family and became a member of Trinity Congregation at Friedensau. When in the year 1881 Bethlehem Congregation was organized at Kiowa and she with her family became a member of this congregation. For a number of years she was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Deshler. During the last years of her life she made her home with her son, Fred, and again became a member of this congregation.

Grandmother Harms died last week Wednesday, having attained the age of eighty seven years, nine months and twenty six days.

Her departure is mourned by five sons: William of Davenport; Fred of Kiowa; Henry, Richard and Gustav, of Melfort, Sask. Canada; four daughters: Mrs. Gesina Heinemann, of Mora, Missouri; Mrs. Anna Heinrichs and Mrs. Lydia Heinrichs, of Davenport; and Mrs. Louise Flathmann of Chester; three sons-in-laws, four daughter-in-laws, forty-four grandchildren, thirty-eight great-grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Palm Sunday afternoon, April 5, at the home of her son, Fred Harms, and at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where Pastor Reimnitz, in English, spoke words of comfort on Gal. 3, 26, 27, and Pastor Wittig, in German, on Eph. 8. Rev. John Meyer also spoke a few parting words in memory of the deceased.

The Kiowa choir sang the words of her own choosing. The children of the school sang "Abide With Me."

The pallbearers were all grandchildren of the deceased: Gustav Harms, Otto Heinemann, Herbert Harms, John Flathmann, Herbert Harms, Elmer Heinrichs and Walter Heinrichs.

Her body was laid to rest in the congregation's cemetery, at the side of her husband, to await the call into everlasting life in the heavenly mansions prepared for the believers.

"Jesus, Thou prince of life!
Thy chosen cannot die;
Like Thee, they conquer in the strife,
To reign with Thee on high."

Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were the following: Mr. and Mrs. John Flathmann and family, of Chester; Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Keim and children, of Nora; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Duensing, of Chester, and Mrs. Heinemann and son, of Mora, Missouri.
