He was a native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, a retired owner/operator of several service stations in Jesup, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Bowden & Royal Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Wanda Morris Smith, and his sister and brother, Eloise Carter and George Smith.
Survivors are a son, Duff Smith of Jesup; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Smith of Athens; a brother, Wayne Smith of Jesup; two grandchildren, Ashley (Matt) Gottschalk and Carr Smith of Athens; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, August 18, 2010 from 6-8 P.M. at the Howard-Jones-Nobles Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. from the Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Buck, Rev. Jerry Rowe, and Rev. Ralph Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery, with honors rendered by American Legion Post #311.
Active pallbearers will be John Carter, James Carter, Corky Carter, Jeffrey Carter, George R. Smith, and Jody Smith.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Bowden & Royal Sunday School Class of Epworth United Methodist Church and the Liar's Club from Town & Country Pharmacy.
