Loran served as a Technician Fifth Grade with the Medical Detachment of the First Battalion, 339th Regiment of the 85th Division of the Fifth Army.

He was "Killed In Action" in the battle around Cassino by a low level German plane while excavating wounded soldiers.

He served for eleven months and was decorated with the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign ribbon with one bronze battle star, the "Bronze Star Medal", and a Purple Heart.

Prior to being drafted in June, 1943 he had worked in the Felton Lumber Company, Felton, Delaware. He was given medical basic training at Camp Grant in Rockford, Illinois, and was sent overseas in December of 1943.

He entered the service on June 22, 1943 in Camden, New Jersey. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Sales clerk and Single, with dependents.

VFW Post 6009 in Felton, Delaware was named in his honor along with two other soldiers: Caleb Simpler and John Ware.

For an unknown reason his name appears on the "World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing Army and Army Air Forces Personnel" as being from Androscoggin County, Maine.
