Dr. Roberts was an educator and writer. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and held a Ph. D. from New York University. His works include two books of poetry, To The Mystic Mark, and Along The Susquehanna. His other works were, The Breaker Whistle Blows and Journey Through. Dr. Roberts parents, Hugh and Ellen, immigrated to America from Wales in 1906 with his brothers Hugh O. and William J. His father worked in the mines until a mining accident cost him his leg in 1913, after which they owned and operated a grocery store in the Rolling Mill Hill area. Dr. Roberts and his wife, Mary Sullivan Roberts, both taught in the Wilkes-Barre Pubic schools.
