Robert was married to the former Bonnie Gonterman on September 4, 1946 in DeKalb, IL. Robert was the owner of Gonterman Jewelers in DeKalb for 36 years. Robert had also worked for Douglas Aircraft building airplanes in Rockford and California for the war effort during W.W.II. He was a Certified Gemologist and a member of American Gem Society, and former member of DeKalb Rotary. Robert was a 59 year member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir for many years. Robert loved playing couple's bridge which he and Bonnie belonged to a Bridge Club for 60 plus years. After his retirement he traveled the world especially to Europe and his beloved island of St. Barts in the Caribbean.
Survivors include: wife: Bonnie of DeKalb, sons: Mark (MaryJo) Abbott of Iowa City, IA, Greg (Gloria) Abbott of Spring Valley, IL, daughter: Debbie (Scott) Chilton of DeKalb, grandchildren: Jason (Danielle) Abbott, Leslie Abbott, Julie (Chris) Kelly, Amy (Jeremy) Lindley, Lindsay (Matt) Schroeder, Andrew Chilton, great-grandchildren: Clare Kelly, Braden Lindley, sister-in-law: Margaret Ann Abbott of Hobbs, New Mexico, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: parents, brother: William, and grandson: Timothy Abbott.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday July 31, 2010 at 10:30 AM in the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Joseph Gastiger officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Park Cemetery DeKalb. Visitation will be held on Friday July 30, 2010 at 4:00PM till 7:00PM in the funeral home.
