Rush Taylor Bowman, 76, of Hillsville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 2, 2003.

He leaves behind a loving family that includes a wife, three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grand-children.
Bowman was born on October 25, 1926, in Laurel Fork, Va. to Kelse and Beulah Jackson Bowman. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Godfrey; and one sister, Ivaline.

Bowman served in the U.S. Army in Berlin, Germany at the end of World War II. He was promoted to corporal on the orders of a U.S. general impressed by the young private's ingenuity and resourcefulness.
Following an honorable discharge in 1950, Bowman returned to Virginia. He ran a dairy farm operation in Laurel Fork before buying businesses in Pulaski and Montgomery Counties. In 1977, he returned to Carroll County and opened Omega, an office supply and Christian bookstore business.

He went on to serve on Hillsville Town Council as a councilman and mayor. He became an ordained minister and served as pastor at four different churches. He was a member of several boards and organizations, including the Carroll County VFW, Hillsville Rotary, and the Montgomery County Board of Zoning Appeals.

Bowman is survived by his wife of 49 years, Loraine Jackson Bowman of Hillsville;
one son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Brenda Bowman of N.C.;
two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Ryland Moore of Va. and B.J. and Peter Wood also VA;
two granddaughters, Nicole Lawson of Floyd County and Elesha Bowman of Jefferson, N.C.;
two grandsons, Jeremy Bowman of Lansing, N.C. and Justin Bowman of Wilmington, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Kendra and Madison;
three nephews and one niece.

Visitation will be at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Chapel in Hillsville from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 5, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Chapel.

Interment will follow at Laurel Fork Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
