Bio as written by Tom Olsen:
Jean was the wife of Fresno attorney, Douglas August May. By 1930 Jean was married to Doug in Fresno where she was a local hotel manager. In the years from at least 1930 to 1940 she and Doug lived in a hotel at 912 Van Ness Avenue from
where they moved to a residence on Olive Avenue. Jean and Doug appear to have provided a "safe place" for family as both her sisters Anna Long in 1930 and Wilma Hendershot in the 1940s came to live in Fresno. Sister Anna then moved to
Miami, Florida, but Wilma stayed on, becoming a co-owner with Jean in a local hotel business. Wilma lived out the remainder of her life in Fresno eventually marrying a local animal broker, Arthur Farmer. Jean passed away in 1953, Doug in 1979, and Wilma in 1986.
The V in Jean V might stand for "Vann" short for "van der Wagen" which is what the girls (van der Wagen sisters) seemed to prefer over their "peculiar" Dutch
name. I don't think they like being called "Wagen" as in "the girl pulling a little red wagen" saying of the time. This was the 1920s. The older sisters were
already married by that time and no longer used their maiden names, but Jean and Wilma and three of their brother, Jake's, daughters went by "Vann."
Like her van der Wagen sisters, Jean was deceptive about her age. She was actually born Jennie van der Wagen on Valentine's Day, 14 February 1891 in Spring Lake, Ottawa County, Michigan
