He died on October 4, 1885 in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania and was interred at Nisky Hill Cemetery, in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
He married Julia P. Meyer. They had three children, Laura Shimer, Mary Catherine Shimer, and Minnie C. Shimer.
