Glen M. Erikson, 85, of Great Bend, died Aug. 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center, Great Bend. He was born Dec. 6, 1924, in rural Council Grove, Morris County, the son of Whilmer and Anna (Swenson) Erikson. He married Betty Randolph on Aug. 5, 1950, at Joplin, Mo. He was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent for Unified School District 428 for 35 years. He grew up in Council Grove and was a Great Bend resident since 1952, coming from Scandia. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Council Grove High School. He graduated with a master's degree in education from Pittsburg State University, where he played football and basketball.
Mr. Erikson was a member of First United Methodist Church, Great Bend Noon Lions Club, American Legion Argonne Post 180, the National Education Association and Great Bend NEA. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, birdwatching, fishing, cycling and outdoor photography. He also took pleasure in traveling, cooking, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and attending sporting events.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Erikson, of the home; one son, Richard Erikson and wife Kelly Miller of Leawood; four daughters, Lou Ann Erikson of Highland Park, Ill., Karole Erikson and husband Jay Miller of Great Bend, Phyllis Erikson and husband Tom Coyne of Naperville, Ill., and Gayle Erikson-Laney and husband Jack Laney of Kansas City, Mo.; AFS student and son, Joep Everts, the Netherlands; two sisters, Lorene Breon of Great Bend and Lois Allphin of Superior, Neb.; and nine grandchildren, Colin Immenschuh, Margaret Horwitz, Rachel Horwitz, Sam Laney, Max Laney, Maia Coyne, Kel Coyne, Sabine Erikson and Claire Erikson.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Great Bend, with the Rev. Tom Sheldon officiant. A private family burial will take place at the Great Bend Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend.
