US Supreme Court Associate Justice. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, he graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1883, earned a law degree from Harvard University and established a law practice in Knoxville, Tennessee. He lectured in law at the University of Tennessee (1898-1907) and was appointed Special Assistant to the Attorney General of the United States in 1907. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Sanford to the United States District Court for the Middle and Eastern Districts of Tennessee, where he served for fifteen years. President Warren G. Harding nominated Sanford as a Justice to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1923 and he served until his death at age 64 in Washington, D.C.
