On August 14, 1723, after family devotions and breakfast Joseph Sr. and his four sons, Samuel, Joseph, Phineas, and Isaac went to meeting and was ambushed by five hostile Indians. While the older Joseph escaped in the bushes his two sons Joseph and Samuel were killed and scalped. The other two, Phineas and Isaac were taken as prisoners to Canada. Phineas carried his younger brother Isaac on his back when he was exhausted, saved him from being killed or left in the woods. It was more then a year before the boys was redeemed. The father made two trips to Canada and returned finally with Joseph on August, 19, 1725.
Phineas was a Captain and one of the founders of Charleston, NH. and a noted Indian fighter. He became distinguished in the Cape Breton war, and also for his brave defense of that plantation April 4, 1747, with a command of about thirty men against an attack of four hundred French and Indians under Mons. Debeline. (Reed's History of Rutland, Mass., pp. 103-105. Hudson's History of Sudbury, Mass., pp. 171-172. The journal of his trip to Canada in 1749 is printed in the "New Hampshire Historical Collections."
