Hamilton, H.L., P.O. Portland Mills, Farmer, Section 6; son of James and Hannah C. Hamilton, nee Ramsay; was born in Winchester, Clark Co., Ky., October 4, 1811. His parents settled in this county in 1834; he came three years later to Russell Township. Was married October 13, 1838, to Mary V. McPherson, born May 25, 1817, by whom he had two children--Robert Duncan, born April 19, 1842; J. Randolph, born July 22, 1844. He was married again in 1847, near Judson, Parke county, to Mrs. Barnes, nee Nancy Todd, born July 10, 1820; one child--Nancy Mabel, born May 16, 1857. Mrs. Hamilton is the oly child in a family of twelve living, the others, with the exception of a sister who lived to the age of forty-eight years, died of consumption in early life. Her parents were the victims of the same disease. Her father died at the age of sixty-eight; her mother at forty-eight. Mrs. Hamilton is now in her sixtieth year, and in good health, which she attributes to a liberal daily use of cold-water baths, for the last twenty-seven or eight years. She has raised, or had under her care, at different periods of her life, some seventeen or eighteen orphans. Mr. Hamilton is a kind husband, a good neighbor and an enterprising man.
