He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Spr Foster died of a gunshot wound from small arms fire, while supporting the 40 Commando Royal Marines Battle Group, in the Sangin district of Helmand province. He had been manning a lookout post outside a patrol base when he was shot by a sniper.

Aged 20, from Whitehaven, near Carlisle, Cumbria. Spr Foster enlisted in September 2008, qualified as a combat engineer and subsequently as a military fabricator. He joined 21 Engineer Regiment, based in Ripon, in May 2010 and had been in Afghanistan for just three weeks. He was employed on a wide range of construction and combat engineer tasks and was closely involved in the demanding project to upgrade and enlarge Patrol Base Sangin Fulod. His hardworking and enthusiastic manner marked him as a soldier with great promise. After disclosing his passion for cooking, he was nicknamed "Cookie" by his colleagues and appointed head engineer chef. He will be remembered as a genuine down to earth guy with a friendly personality.

Spr Foster leaves behind his parents Alison and Shaun, siblings Michael, Rachel, Paul, Christina and Carlton, grandparents Marian, Ian and Anne, girlfriend Hayley Nugent, other relatives and many friends. His family said, "He was a loving son, grandson and brother who will be sorely missed for his crazy flamboyant lifestyle. His only aim was to serve in the Army, for which he made us all proud."

Funeral with full military honours was held on September 1, 2010 at Carlisle Cathedral.
