Joseph Burke Parsons was the son of Amander Parsons and Elizabeth(Betsey) Burke. He came with his parents to Florida in the mid-1800s. They first settled in the Mayport area of Duval County. His family operated a sawmill in that area. Joseph Burke Parsons married Susan Emiline Heckel on September 17, 1869 in Jacksonville, Duval, Florida. They had four children: Alonzo J. Parsons, born April 1866, died-November 1897; Joseph Burke Parsons, Jr., born December 1868, died December 1868; John Sammis Parsons, born September 1871, died July 1930; and Amander Parsons born November 1873, died March 1933.
Joseph Burke Parsons served in the U.S. Civil War from 1861-1865. Joseph wrote a lengthy and interesting letter to his oldest grandson, Joseph Burke Parsons(son of John Sammis Parsons) about his some of his experiences during the war. In this letter Joseph also expresses his personal philosophies of life. This gives insight into the man. He was a Christian man of integrity with a loyalty to family.
