Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Born in Lisbon, Ohio, following graduation from Western Reserve College in 1877, he was admitted to the bar in 1877 and established his own practice, specializing in corporate law. In 1897, he left his private practice to join a Cleveland law firm. Clarke had been a practicing attorney for thirty-five years when President Woodrow Wilson appointed him to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, in 1914. On July 24, 1916, President Wilson appointed Clarke to the Supreme Court of the United States. He remained on the bench until he resigned from the Supreme Court on September 18, 1922, to promote American participation in the League of Nations. He died at age 87 in San Diego, California.
