Elmer D. Butcher, 55, R.1, Springville, died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital, where he had just entered. Butcher, a city sanitation department employee, was taken to the hospital for treatment after he reportedly suffered a coronary while driving a department truck north on L Street, between Fifteenth and Sixteenth Streets, where the truck went out of control and struck a tree in a treeplat.
Butcher is a native of Monroe county, where he was born June 9, 1920 to Joseph and Lora Sheilds Butcher. He was married to Bernice Godsey, June 11, 1971.
Survivors include the wife; four sons, Dennis, R. 1, Springville and Roger, Tim, and Rick, all of R. 4, Bedford; three daughters, Mrs. George (Jean) Calvert, Bloomington, Mrs. Olin (Beverly) Corey, Springville, and Mrs. Danny (Patricia) Lester, R. 2; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Vesta Eads, R. 8, Bloomington, Mrs. Zetta Hillenburg, R. 4, Bloomington and Mrs. Zella Moore, Orlando, Florida and one brother, Melvin Butcher, R. 5, Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He was a member of Pentecost faith.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Elmwood Chapel, Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. James Lucas officiating. Burial will be in the Springville Methodist cemetery. Friends may call at the Day & Carter Mortuary after noon Thursday.
