Donald J. "Gump" DeFrieze, 75, New Boston, formerly of Rock Island, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military rites conducted by American Legion and VFW.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to New Boston-Eliza Fire District Volunteer Ambulance Service.

Mr. DeFrieze was born July 23, 1923, in Dubuque, to Louis and Pauline Minnig DeFrieze.

He was a machinist at the former J.I. Case Company, Rock Island, for 21 years, retiring in 1967. He was a member of New Boston American Legion Post 48 and was a lifetime Cubs fan.

He was a WW II Army veteran having served as a Private First Class with Co. F351st Infantry. He served in Tunisia, North African Campaign and Sicily, Italian Campaign. He fought in battles at Bizerte, Palermo, Salerno, Fogia, Naples, Rome, Monte Cassino, Apennines and Po Valley. He received Victory Medal, European-African- Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons, Silver Star, five Overseas Service Bars. He was wounded in action once.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Norbert Tanner, Milan; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald M. and Eileen DeFrieze, New Boston; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Dunbar, Moline; and brothers and a sister-in-law, Melvin DeFrieze, Milan, and Harold and Virginia DeFrieze, East Moline. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Borchers, and brothers, Albert "Boz" and Louis DeFrieze.
