William Howe Lawrence; THE HAY SPRINGS CENTENNIAL 1885-1985, Hay Springs, Nebraska
Pioneer of 1884, William Howe Lawrence settled his land seven miles west of Rushville and it is still in the family in 1984. The Homesteads in this area were begun by living in dugouts. The soddys came next and then log cabins. The house that is presently standing in which his great grandson, Melvin Barth and his wife Kathleen now reside was ordered from Sears and Roebuck precut in the early 1900's. Melvin Barth's father and son Melvin farm this Heritage Place that Lyle Barth grew up on. His mother being Iva Lawrence, daughter of William Howe Lawrence.

William Howe Lawrence was born in Wisconsin on March 4, 1858 in Belle Center, Crawford Co., WI, and died September 20, 1923 at his home seven miles west of Rushville, NE after a brief illness. He was the son of Charles and Nancy Jane Richardson Lawrence.

He was united in marriage to Annetta Melvina Borden (Nettie) by Rev. John Day at Scott, Crawford Co., WI on December 19, 1881. She was born in the state of New York on April 11, 1863 and died March 2, 1936 in Hay Springs, NE. She was the daughter of James and Mary Elizabeth Allison Bordon.

William and Nettie Lawrence had nine children, all except the youngest, Ida Ann Lawrence, grew to adulthood. William was one of the early settlers in Hay Springs having arrived there in the spring of 1884. Not being a man of rugged health, he worked under a burden all his life. Many marveled at his perseverence and faithfulness in establishing a home through the trying circumstances which confronted him at times. His thoughts and untiring zeal were so accomplished that would bring maintenance and comfort to his loved ones.

For many years he occupied prominent rank in our midst, maintaining under circumstances a character untarnished in reputation above reproach. In his death we have sustained the loss of a friend whose fellowship it was a honor and pleasure to enjoy. He ws esteemed by his fellowmen and with whom he had any associations. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and was dearly beloved by all his family and relatives. He leaves mourning his death his faithful wife, eight children, twelve grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.

Thos surviving are Mrs. Nettie Lawrence, William Frank, Esther Virginia (Mrs. Ed Williams), Harley Amon, Lester Elmer, Emery Leland, Edward Claude, Roy Ray, Iva Grace (Mrs. Henry Barth Hoos). Brothers Mr. Marion Lawrence of Lanesboro, IA, Mr. Ira Lawrence of Alliance, NE and sister Mrs. Mary Lawrence Vestal of Beloit, KS.

All of his family were present at the funeral, also a sister of Mrs. Annetta Borden Lawrence, Mrs. Ella Clark and the latter's daughter, Mrs. Edna Metzger, both of Lusk, WY. Another half sister Mrs. Joseph Hobson and husband of Valentine, NE were here.

Sunday afternoon the immediate family gathered around their loved one for a prayer before leaving the funeral home for burial. Services were held in the Methodist Church 2:30 pm with the Rev. Gainsmon being in charge. The church was filled with sympathizing friends who gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to their departed friend.

The body was laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery, the casket being covered with beautiful blossoms and floral pieces

"The vacant place, the enmpy chair. We see them day by day: and on it fills our hearts with care, since our loved one went away. But though the light has left us here, like the setting of the sun, we'll trush thee ever Farther Dear, and say 'Thy Will be Done'."
