Johann Georg was my husband's 2nd Great-Grandfather

He was the son of Johann Nikolas Martin HOPPERDIEZEL & Barbara RODEL.

His first marriage in Germany was to Margaretha Katharina BIEDERMANN on 22 May 1853 in Rehau, Hof, Bavaria, Germany.

They had three children together:

Eva Margaretha Johanna HOPPERDIETZEL (1853-1874)
Anna Maria HOPPERDIETZEL (1859-1860)
Johan Nikolas HOPPERDIETZEL (1862)

Margaretha died in 1877 of "wasting/consumption".

After his first wife's death Johann Georg met the woman who would be his second wife. Barbara SCHALLER was 17 and kept house for Johann & his son Nikolas. When he asked her to marry him she said "NO", even though her parents thought she should. He was 25 years older than she was. Barbara decided to sail to America with another couple. Eventually they arrived in Manistee, Michigan. George came to America too, and when he asked her to marry him again she agreed because she was penniless and glad to see him. They married on June 5, 1881 in Manistee, Michigan.

Johann & Barbara left Michigan in 1884 and went to the town of Halsey (right out of Athens, WI). The Rietbrock Lumber Company was opening the land to the settlers. They chose a forty acre tract in the Town of Halsey to be near the Joseph Welbes family, who had moved from Michigan a year before. They later bought an eighty acre piece of land across the road from them.

Johann & Barbara they had five children:

John Martin HOPPERDIETZEL
Frank Fredrick HOPPERDIETZEL
Emelia Anna Caroline HOPPERDIETZEL Fiedler
George Emil HOPPERDIETZEL, Jr
Carl William "Charles" HOPPERDIETZEL

George passed away from pneumonia in 1901 at the age of 71. His boys, John, Frank, George, and Carl worked in the woods and Barbara managed to get the farm paid for. In 1922 Barbara sold the farm to her son George, and she moved to a house in Athens, Wisconsin.
