David left his children with his brother Humphrey and went to California. Returning to Missouri, he married (2) Lavinia Wilson. In 1860, David, Lavinia, and his children by both marriages were living in Harrison township of Daviess County, Missouri. David enlisted in Company E, Third Missouri Infantry of the Confederate Army. He was killed 1861 at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri.
From the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield website at http://www.nps.gov/wicr/faqs.htm: "Following the battle nearly all the soldiers killed in the fighting were buried on the battlefield. In 1867, the Springfield National Cemetery was created and the Union dead were removed there. A short time later, the Southern dead were taken there as well and placed in an adjacent plot (now part of the National Cemetery). Unfortunately, only a handful of the Wilson's Creek dead at the Springfield National Cemetery are identified."
