Iranian President, Prime Minister. Born in Ghazin, Iran, he was elected as Iran's second president following the impeachment of President Abolhassan Banisadr. He joined the Iranian Air Force at the age of 16, before joining the Iranian Liberation Movement in 1960. He was imprisoned on three separate occasions for anti political activities against the monarchy and government of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. In February 1979 he was elected as the first president of the Islamic Republican Party, nine months prior to the overthrow of Shah and the seizure of the U.S. embassy compound in Tehran. Following the Islamic Revolution, he served briefly as the Minister of Education. From August 12, 1980 to August 4, 1981 he served as the nation's Prime Minister and also served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from March 11, 1981 to August 15, 1981. He was killed less than one month after assuming the presidency, along with newly appointed Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar, in a suitcase bombing at Bahonar's downtown office in Tehran.
