Joseph Jewett was the son of Edmund M Jewett and Nancy Hitchings.
Joseph was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a resident of Des Moines, Iowa, when he enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co D 2nd Iowa Cavalry at the age of 49. He was promoted to Full 2nd Battalion Major on 29 Oct 1861. On 26 Dec 1861 he was commissioned into Field and Staff 4th Iowa Cavalry. Joseph was promoted to Full Major on 4 Jun 1862. He resigned from 4th Iowa Cavalry on 2 Jan 1863.
Joseph married Hannah Brown in Ohio in 1843. They had six known children. Hannah died in Iowa in 1859, the same year their youngest child was born.
In 1860, Joseph married Lois Clark in Polk County, Iowa. Lois and Joseph had four known children.
Joseph died in Johnson County, Iowa, at the age of 61 years.
